Specifying television networks by race, causes segregation

I just wanted to point out one thing about Anthony Williams’ comparison of MTV and BET in the July 10 column “Subliminal Segregation.” He failed to mention the most obvious thing about the networks. While MTV may primarily show “white” programs —- although this is questionable considering how many different races are represented by music and shows like “The Real World” — it at least makes an effort to be racially inclusive. BET is a network designated by name and programming to reach solely a black audience. I believe this is the definition of segregation. How would Anthony feel if there were White Entertainment Television, Hispanic Entertainment Television or Asian Entertainment Television? I don’t think these channels would be well-received. The whole idea of segregation is awful, but I wouldn’t place the blame on channels that are actually open to anyone. Networks like BET are the ones that help keep the segregation issue coming back again and again.
