The Shorthorn staff
A recent recipient of a national fellowship from the Indian government
will speak Saturday in Nedderman Hall.
Dr. Sudershan Rao will lecture at a seminar celebrating 150 years of Indian
freedom from British rule. His lecture will highlight India’s struggle
for independence and the effect on its culture.
Mechanical engineering alumnus Madhav R. Kashinath and some friends helped
organize Saturday’s event so students, faculty and staff could learn
more about the First War of Indian Independence. He hopes for a large
turnout for the one-hour lecture, which will be followed by a question-and-answer
session. He asked that those who attend keep an open mind about the Indian
people.
“People should know in this war for the first time, [Indians] of
all religions came together under one banner for self-rule,” Kashinath
said.
Milind Bhaskarwar, a friend of Kashinath who helped organize the seminar,
hopes attendees will learn about the scale of India’s first war
for independence.
“It’s like the movie 300,” he said. “It’s
that sort of war.”
Syan Pevan, a spokesperson for the nonprofit organization Hindu Swayamsevak
Sangh, also helped to organize the lecture. He said the university division
of the organization is Hindu Yuva, which means “Hindu youth.”
He said the history of India’s fight for independence, though 150
years old, is relevant to understanding Indian culture.
