Student Affairs

Housing under new authority

The change is mostly in staff reporting lines, so students shouldn’t feel it too much.

Story by: J. Blankenship

The Shorthorn staff
The Housing Office shifted some services to Student Affairs last week, streamlining internal reporting and simplifying student services so residential social activities will be paired more closely with student activities.

“We felt this made the most sense,” said Frank Lamas, Student Affairs vice president. “We will make sure students get cocurricular residential activities, and we will work with the Housing Office so student rooms are taken care of.”

Wylvan Parker, Housing and University Center assistant vice president, said his area retains most of the operations, while staffing and services focuses on the residence switch. Four employees in the office are physically relocating closer to Student Affairs on the University Center lower level.

More than 70 residence assistants, hall directors, coordinators and program directors simply shift divisional reporting lines. Housing supervisor Molly Albart was out of the office and unable to respond to questions about these changes.

“This will give Molly and her staff opportunities to share ideas more directly with employees sharing a common focus on student activities,” Parker said. “That means more resources are readily available to help them perform their jobs better.”

Contracts, maintenance, facilities and equipment matters will remain under Parker’s direction, so students can expect to receive leasing and renewal information from his office as usual. Most of these transactions are conducted online, so the impact on students should be minimal, he said. Billing cycles won’t change.
