The university community will have the opportunity to provide feedback on two candidates applying for the position of Multicultural Affairs director this week.

Leticia Martinez and Traci Guinn will each give a presentation to a selection committee, which will recommend its choice to Frank Lamas, Student Affairs vice president, said selection committee co-chair Dianne Hengst, Office for Students with Disabilities director.

Lamas said they hope to hire a new director by August.

The eight-member committee includes Hengst, Cynthia Bing, Career Counseling Services director, four staff members from Student Affairs and two students.

“I’m hoping that we hire someone who is really interested in students,” accounting senior Alexis Collazo said.

Collazo was the Multicultural Greek Council president last year and is one of the students on the selection committee.

She said the Multicultural Affairs director often advises student organizations on events like Black History Month and Hispanic Heritage Month.

Hengst said the committee is searching for candidates with new ideas and experience in community and faculty outreach.

Jeff Sorensen, Student Affairs assistant vice president, said the presentations are open to the university community. Attendees can offer input after each presentation.

The presentations will cover the importance of diversity in higher education and the role of a multicultural affairs office, Sorensen said.

Martinez, director of the Institute of Hispanic-Latino Cultures at the University of Florida, will present Wednesday from 11 to 11:30 a.m. in Student Congress Chambers. Guinn’s presentation will be Friday from 10:45 to 11:15 a.m. in the same room, Sorensen said.

The Shorthorn reported the previous Multicultural Affairs director, Fred Henry, left the position for the private sector in April 2007.

University community members can also e-mail feedback to Dianne Hengst at dianne@uta.edu.

Open-forum presentations will be held Wednesday at 11-11:30 a.m. and Friday at 10:45-11:15 a.m. in Student Congress Chambers on the UC basement level.
