Be Heard

Each week, Scene gives Mavericks the chance to be heard by voicing their thoughts, feelings and opinions.

Damon Barnard,
Psychology and Chemistry junior

What qualities make a hero?

Modesty, altruism and the proper opportunity or situation.

What’s your best memory with your grandparents?

A lot of them are still alive, so that’s cool. Once we rented a beach house for a week down on the coast. Out on the Gulf we did crab fishing and other fishing off the docks. It was a good week with the whole family, really.

What’s one goal you would like to achieve in life?

To figure out what that one goal is.

What are your thoughts on ghosts?

You can’t prove what you can’t disprove.

How high would gas have to get for you to quit buying it?

I can actually afford quite a bit of gas. The price of gas is too high when there’s no longer food on the table.

What’s the worst smell ever?

I can’t choose between salt-lake shrimp, all of them dying, or burning hair.

What’s the greatest invention?

Obviously the transistor. Truly the development of the agrarian society.

How will the world have changed 50 years from now?

I can’t predict anything, honestly. Really, the most I can hope for is the world becoming more of a community. That’s just a hope, though, but I doubt it.

Erin Larkin,
Anthropology graduate student

What qualities make a hero?

Technically, having divine parents. Someone who has good moral standards and is kind and compassionate to those around them.

What’s your best memory with your grandparents?

When my grandfather finally started telling me his experiences in World War II. He was very decorated. I was very honored he told me his stories.

What’s one goal you would like to achieve in life?

I would like to have a family.

What are your thoughts on ghosts?

They’re very interesting in books.

How high would gas have to get for you to quit buying it?

I don’t have a license, and I don’t have a car. Therefore, it would have to get really high before it started affecting my bicycle.

What’s the worst smell ever?

The worst smell ever is a baby’s diaper after you’ve fed him formula. You could kill Third World countries with that smell.

What’s the greatest invention?

The flush toilet. That’s really, really high on the list of things I could not go without.

How will the world have changed 50 years from now?

I think America will no longer be as powerful as it is today. I could see that in 50 years we may not even be a world power.
