Despite rainy weather, EX.C.E.L. Campus Activities boasted a near-capacity crowd for the organization’s Summer Movie Series event Thursday after moving it inside.

The evening screening of 300 brought 425 people to the University Center Rosebud Theatre, which can hold 449.

The screenings are usually held on the Activities Building west lawn, but due to the recent onset of rain, the organization decided Wednesday to move the event indoors.

Undeclared sophomore Gillian Talley, organization entertainment and arts director, said the summer movies are usually well-attended but that the success Thursday was due to the film being shown. She thought her organization handled the change well.

“I think we were pretty on-the-ball changing the advertising,” she said. “It’s 300. It’s one of those movies that really plays to a college audience.”

Talley said that although she thought the event turned out well, she definitely enjoys the outdoor setting better.

“When we show the movies outside, people just seem to like it a lot more,” she said. “I think it feels more like summer.”

Students attended the event for a multitude of reasons. Broadcast journalism senior Tia Latham had seen the movie before but said she just had to see it again.

“I came to enjoy the movie. I liked it the first time,” she said. “The guys wear capes and Speedos and nothing else and just show off their muscles.”

Information systems junior Fred Meyers enjoyed the film but kept his reasons brief.

“300 is awesome, and it’s free,” he said.

This week’s film, Blades of Glory, will be held outside Thursday to the delight of one moviegoer, engineering graduate student Collins Watson.

“I actually went and bought a lawn chair last week to see 300 outside, but I guess I’ll just have to use it for Blades of Glory next week,” the Student Congress president said.
