Making Changes

University hopes new Human Resources vice president will bring change to the newly-upgraded position

A new vice president arrives at the university in a few weeks. He’ll be filling an upgraded position that points toward a shift in campus priorities.

Anthony Kinslow becomes Human Resources vice president Aug. 1. He will report directly to President James Spaniolo.

Kinslow steps into the role vacated when a Human Resources employee retired. The new position, which changed from associate vice president to vice president, signals a shift in campus initiatives. Administrators anticipate employees and students will benefit from the change, Spaniolo said.

“This says something about the importance of Human Resources and the role it can play across campus,” he said. “We are expecting HR to be more of a strategic partner than in the past.”

Spaniolo projects an increased awareness of programs and services available to every employee. He anticipates the department becoming a stronger resource for faculty and staff, ultimately impacting students. He said Human Resources stood “solid” in the past and that he expects that to continue under Kinslow’s leadership.

Kinslow departs Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, where he has served as Human Resources vice president since 2003. That campus was named one of the Best Places to Work in Northeast Ohio by the Employers’ Resources Council for three consecutive years.

“Whether you get awards or not isn’t the point,” Spaniolo said. “We want to be a welcoming and enduring place to work. That’s the goal. The fact that we can attract a highly skilled professional is a good sign.”

Kinslow is an attorney and certified senior professional in human resources by the Society of Human Resources Management. He graduated from Vanderbilt University Law School and holds a master’s degree in international relations from the University of California. He directed employee relations at the California Institute of Technology. He also served as executive director of human resources at Vanderbilt Medical Center and as human resources programs director for Vanderbilt University.

Kinslow will oversee Human Resources in addition to equal opportunity and affirmative actions teams. He said the university attracted him because of its diversity.
