Lecturer urges keeping an eye on deals the university makes
I read the June 19 editorial on gas drilling and would like to respond
as a homeowner, UTA student and university staff member. I understand
the position the paper is taking; however, to print that the university
has been forthright with its neighbors is inaccurate.
Rusty Ward, vice president for business affairs and controller, may think
that Carrizo Oil and Gas, Inc. has a good reputation concerning its dealings
with neighborhoods, but that would be erroneous in this situation. Neighbors
found out from real estate agents regarding the proposed drilling, not
from the university or the company.
To say the university has done its homework is an exaggeration. Clearly
it did not plan to tell residents about anything until after the deal
was inked. Now we are being put off until August to wait and see about
our personal safety and home values.
The issue of drilling in urban areas has received national attention on
NBC and in The Associated Press. I urge The Shorthorn to be a careful
watchdog of the deals done in Davis Hall and to safeguard not only the
students but the university community.
