The Road Ahead
Proposed bus routes linking Arlington and Fort Worth may pave way for
public transportation
The prospect of public transportation from Arlington to Fort Worth
is a service that would benefit area residents, but we hope this small
beginning will bring bigger projects that will also serve university students.
The Fort Worth Transportation Authority proposes scheduled pick-ups at
6, 7 and 8 a.m. and 4, 5 and 6 p.m. in at the park-and-ride lots at Interstate
20 and Park Springs Road and at Interstate 30 and Cooper Street. Buses
that seat 40 passengers and run on compressed natural gas are scheduled
to arrive in early 2008. The Fort Worth Transportation Authority will
then send a contract to the City Council.
In the past, Arlington voters have turned down public transportation three
times, and with this recent proposal, the city is playing it safe by holding
a public hearing to get feedback from residents before they agree to the
project. One of the concerns over previous proposals was an increase in
sales tax. The $75,000 financial commitment for this project would come
from the city’s current public works budget.
Students likely will not benefit from these new routes, as there would
be no way to get from the park-and-ride lots to campus, but it should
bring some hope that, if successful, the opportunity for expansion of
Arlington bus routes will have a better chance of materializing.
Pilot programs like this are great ways to spend money on city projects,
and if Arlington and its residents commit to this proposal, we hope strong
ridership on the bus routes will ensue.
The city appears to be taking baby steps toward bringing mainstream public
transportation to Arlington with a possibility of introducing more bus
routes that help UTA students lacking transportation.
EDITORIAL ROUNDUP
The issue:
The possibility of a bus system in Arlington is encouraging news for
a city lacking public transportation.
We suggest:
Although the bus proposal is small in scale, we hope this will lead to
future expansion of routes that will benefit UTA students.
