Be Heard

Each week, Scene gives Mavericks the chance to be heard by voicing their thoughts, feelings and opinions.

Elaina Atkinson,
undeclared freshman

How could poverty be eliminated?

I’m all into changing what the government does with our money. I’d like to see more of the money stay in our country.

Who’s your hero?

My mom’s pretty up there. I think Oprah Winfrey is a pretty good person. I like the example she sets.

What’s the worst pickup line?

Guy: Did it hurt?
Girl: What?
Guy: When you fell from heaven?

What’s the most significant event to happen in U.S. history?

The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. That’s when the U.S. declared we had world power.

If you were an animal, what animal would you be?

A house cat — they have the life. I’m totally for lounging around in the sun all day.

Who’s not running for president that you think should be?

Condoleezza Rice. I really respect her as an intellectual. She’s a really great person. I would support her.

How important is your freedom to you?

Very important. I think we take it for granted a whole lot. I think we complain about what we don’t have instead of being grateful for what we do have.

Russell Perkins,
nursing junior

How could poverty be eliminated?

Realistically, I don’t think it can be.

Who’s your hero?

My dad. He grew up with nothing and he worked all his life extremely hard at jobs other people wouldn’t do. He never asked for anything for himself.

What’s the worst pickup line?

I think they are all bad. If you’re using a pickup line, you probably don’t have a shot in hell anyway.

What’s the most significant event to happen in U.S. history?

Probably the Civil War.

If you were an animal, what animal would you be?

A platypus. It’s a mammal, but it lays eggs. It’s making fun of Darwin and man’s general idea that they can classify everything on earth.

Who’s not running for president that you think should be?

Colin Powell.

How important is your freedom to you?

Very important. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to study the way we would want to and we would be dictated on how to live our lives.
