Team wins conference, heads to nationals
The Mavericks squeaked by UT-San Antonio, 128-127, to win the
team title May 6 at the 2007 Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field
Championships held at Homer Bryce Stadium in Nacogdoches.
The Mavs rallied to first past four other teams, scoring 100 points on
the final day alone. None were more important than the 10 earned in their
final event, the 4x400-meter relay. Sprinters Jared Connaughton, Byron
Majors, Curtis Hoyle and Eddie Beckwith clocked in at 3 minutes, 9.81
seconds, ahead of Texas State and UTSA.
The team didn’t fare as well in the 4x400 at Saturday’s NCAA
Midwest Region Track and Field Championships in Iowa, but the 4x100-meter
relay team earned a spot at the NCAA Track and Field Championships.
Connaughton, two-time defending SLC champion in the 200-meter dash and
a part of that relay, will also compete on his own for the second year
in a row in the 200-meter contest.
He’ll be joined by Jon McDowell, who placed second in the men’s
110-meter hurdles with his personal-best time of 13.69 seconds.
The NCAA Track and Field Championships takes place June 7-9 in Sacramento,
Calif.

Men’s track coach gets big conference honors
John Sauerhage, track and field head coach, has been named the
Southland Conference 2007 Men’s Coach of the Year.
The announcement comes after the men’s team came back to win their
conference title over UT-San Antonio, 128-127.
It’s Sauerhage’s second men’s outdoor coach of the year
honor since 1996, and his 16th overall time named an SLC coach of the
year.
