The Mavericks kicked off the weekend with a win against Northwestern State but lost the next two in the three-game Southland Conference series at Clay Gould Ballpark.

Friday’s victory came with ease as UTA defeated Northwestern, 7-0, their sixth-straight victory over the Demons.

“We try to win one inning at a time,” assistant coach Jay Sirianni said. “Take the small successes and hope they add up to a win.”

Pitcher Dillon Gee worked his magic on the mound, pitching a shut-out in a game that saw the junior throw just 92 pitches. In nine innings of work on the mound, he allowed just three hits and struck out 10 batters. This was the second game this season he struck out more than nine batters and the third of his career.

Right fielder Danny Slinkman went 3-5 with two RBIs as designate hitter Mitch Putman also brought in two batters.

“We played very well,” Sirianni said. “It was fun to watch our guys succeed.”

The Demons demolished the Mavericks on Saturday as they rebounded to a 14-4 victory.

Northwestern’s offense dominated UTA, bringing in two runs in both the first and third innings before putting up five in the fifth and ninth.

Eamon Donovan received the loss after giving up four runs off five hits and striking out two in three innings. A total of four UTA pitchers took the mound over the course of the game.

A two-run triple with two outs by Demons shortstop Brandon Richey in the top of the eighth Sunday handed the Mavericks a 4-2 loss in the final game of the weekend.

“It was a great game,” Sirianni said. “Sunday’s pitchers did a great job. Northwestern State just did a few small things better.”

Nathan Long took the loss after allowing three runs from five hits and striking out six in 7 2/3 innings.
