In anticipation of our very own Best of UTA section printing Friday, in which you can find out what the student body is going crazy for, Scene decided to take another direction. Here is what we call the Best of the Rest. Included are several places, things and events you should be aware of before your stay here is officially over.

You’ll thanks us later.

Best Place to Drop Your Kids Off at the Pool

If you’re having issues with taking a public poop, you’ll be happy to hear and smell that the nicest potties you’re going to encounter are in the Chemistry and Physics Building. Any floor is fine, and you’ll never be without the essentials.

There are sparkling floors, great lighting and low traffic if you’re a little pee-shy. No awkward explosions going on here aside from the ones in the labs, so relax and take a seat.

Best Pen

Bic
Ballpoint is the way to go. The ink flows naturally and smoothly, and the words look so slick and neat on notebook paper. Ink pens look all scratchy and squiggly. No matter how slowly you write, your handwriting always ends up looking like chicken scratch. Bic ball-points are a cheap and just-as-effective alternative.

Best Place to Spend $10 on Food and Still be Hungry

The Market

The Market offers a plethora of little snacks to munch on between classes, but usually by the time you’ve opened the package, it’s gone. Items that sell for around half the price at 7-Eleven are available for those in a rush. The single-serving dinners and sandwiches hit the spot after sitting through an hour-long class lecture but may not be enough to tackle the hunger of the average college student.

Best Bike Rack

(tie) outside the Central Library and outside Ransom Hall

The racks in front of the Central Library are awesome for their location near where everything happens on what can almost be called the campus quad. Those outside Ransom Hall are nice because they’re located more inside the campus, where drive-by bike snatchers may not even be aware of your precious wheels. Except for maybe now. Crap.

Best Place to Cause a Scene:

Breezeway between Ransom and Preston halls

One word: echo. No matter where you stand between that conglomerate of buildings between Preston and Ransom halls, and no matter how softly you may think you’re speaking, your voice will echo. Have a beef with someone and want everyone on campus to hear you? Take your victim and let him or her have it between these two traffic-heavy buildings.

Best Place To Eavesdrop on Conversations

University Center food court

Anytime between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., when what is known as the Plaza is likely at full capacity, you’re bound to just fall into someone else’s business sitting at any of the packed-in tables. You’ll know about how Julie’s boyfriend raped her, Elena’s inability to tell a headband from a skirt and how Ben’s alcoholic father won’t financially support him through school. Wait, that’s “Felicity.” Maybe we need to hang out there more.

Best Place to be Off Campus On Campus

Architecture Building courtyard

The Architecture Building courtyard makes you feel like you’re outside some modern museum and not less than 50 feet from your lame three-hour lab. With a beautiful cascading fountain and a vibrant shade of green, this is your destination for relieving tension.

— AW

Best Place to Have a Private Conversation on a School Phone:

Central Library fourth floor

The Central Library has several phones if you don’t have one yourself or if you constantly find yourself low on minutes. The best phone, though, may be on the fourth floor. It’s a little quieter than the other phones in the building, because not as many people walk by. Since there usually aren’t many people on that floor, you don’t have to worry about disturbing others with your conversations.

— Princess McDowell

Best Place to Almost Get Hit by a Car:

Crossing Cooper Street between Mitchell and the central bridge

Several tardy students trying to run to class have probably already risked their lives on this dangerous “highway.” Beware, because you may think that sprinting across Cooper St. isn’t much, but students in a hurry to get a good parking spot or get to class come barreling down that street at 50 miles per hour with no regard for pedestrians. Don’t lie, you know you’ve done it.
