Criminally Funny
Eclectic characters push fresh, edgy humor

The characters of Comedy Central’s “Halfway Home”
enjoy another normal, fun-filled evening at the rehabilitation center.
It’s 3 a.m. and it’s time for random urine drug tests.
Four disoriented criminals wake up in their halfway home to the sound
of their supervisor and counselor Kenny and neurotic pyromaniac Alan knocking
and yelling on their bedroom doors.
And so the show begins without a hitch. Witty, smart, brash and hilarious,
“Halfway Home” premiers at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday on Comedy Central
and promises tons of laughs.
Bringing together a cast of different sizes, colors, shapes, ages and
orientations, the show at first seems to be a criminals’ point-of-view
version of “Reno 911!” but is actually fresh while maintaining
a Comedy Central flair for dancing on the line of cable-friendliness.
The majority of the cast — less Jessica Makinson’s drug-trafficking
Carly Barzac — is awesome. Makinson falls a little flat and is easily
forgettable. The other characters range from a homosexual Latino gigolo,
played by Oscar Nuñez, to Jordan Black’s young black criminal
from an upper-class family just going through the motions of rehabilitation.
The pilot episode stays away from any cheesy mistakes many shows have
to work their way through. No awkward jokes or slow periods to worry about.
“Halfway Home” is easily watchable and does a great job of
introducing the characters quickly and getting right to the funny.
Comedy Central has another in-your-face sitcom that pushes limits, buttons
and every other thing that can be pushed. For Comedy Central fans, and
fans of edgy comedies, this one should be a regularly scheduled program
for you. And if you can’t make time to sit down and watch it, learn
how to program a VCR or TiVo it.
“Halfway Home”
Premieres at 9:30 p.m. March 14 on Comedy Central
Starring: Jordan Black, Regan Burns, Jessica Makinson, Oscar
Nuñez, Kevin Ruf, Octavia Spencer
Ranking: 4 stars on a 1-5 scale
