The National Pan-Hellenic Council will host Meet the Greeks at 7 tonight in the University Center Bluebonnet Ballroom.

The event is the orientation to rush for the council’s fraternities and sororities on campus.

“Every council has to do an orientation,” said Mike Taddesse, Greek Life and university events program coordinator. “It’s also an opportunity for prospective members to meet with members on the council.”

Entrance will cost $5.

Rush begins Monday at 7 p.m. in the UC Concho Room.

The orientation will include a presentation on the dangers of hazing, rules of Rush week and the seven organizations’ personal introductions.

Prospective members must be university students and have at least a 2.5 grade point average.

Two alumni organizations, Phi Beta Sigma and Delta Sigma Theta, will debut after a short absence from campus.

“Some chapters will die for whatever reason, but it’s always good to see them come back,” he said.

Organization presentations will last about 10 minutes and may include PowerPoints and step performances, he said.

“A lot of them may just talk about their history,” Taddesse said. “A lot of them have a really rich history.”

Alumna Kendria Sims, Delta Sigma Theta member and council president, said the sorority’s presentation will be put on by its membership intake training coordinator.

“It’s just a presentation on what the sorority is, and we’ll be talking about membership intake. And if anybody is interested in becoming a member, we’ll tell them how that process occurs,” she said.

Sims said the sorority will use Rush to reestablish its presence on campus.

She said the number of members it hopes to recruit will depend on the number interested in the organization at Rush.

Taddesse called Rush a great way to promote the organizations if done correctly.

“When everybody knows all the facts, it can be a great thing,” he said.
