Funds cut for student magazine

‘Renegade’ will not be printed next year after the fee committee refused to give money to the publication.

UTA’s student-run Renegade Magazine will not be in publication next year due to a complete cut in funding.

The Student Service Fee Advisory Committee, which distributes funds generated by student fees, decided to stop funding the magazine due to lack of sales, committee chairman Zac Walker said.

Walker, public relations senior and former Student Congress program director, gave a brief overview of the committee’s funding distribution for the fiscal year 2006-07 at Tuesday night’s SC meeting. He said the recommendations were approved by President James Spaniolo. The committee received over $1.5 million in fund requests, which is 70 times more than the funds available.

“This doesn’t mean it’s the end of the Renegade,” Walker said. “It just means the committee decided not to fund it, and it needs to look else where for funding.”

However, Clay Swartz, Renegade editor and journalism senior, said the magazine is not in a position to find other means of funding. He is disappointed because the news comes just after the magazine was awarded Best College Magazine by the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association in 2005 and Best College Magazine in the Nation by the Society of Professional Journalists in 2003.

“This isn’t just about circulation,” he said. “It should be about the experiences offered to the people who worked for the Renegade.”

Student Publications Director Lloyd Goodman said that while he is disappointed, he understands the committee’s decision.

He said Renegade has given the university national attention, and the department will be taking a look at the marketing and distribution of the magazine.

“I will be working with the editors to see what they liked and didn’t like about the magazine and draw up a new plan,” he said.

Walker also reported that the committee has set a three-year plan in motion to gradually stop funding academically-based programs. The committee recommended a reduction in funds for the Theater Arts Department, Mav Mover and the Music Department.

For example, he said the Music Department requested funds for a staff member to assist with required junior and senior recitals, and the committee sees this as an academic endeavor.

“There are some things that the committee are being asked to fund that we feel the administration should be taking care of,” he said. “The demand for student services is growing, and the funds are not.”

The committee also recommended that certain departments and organizations be evaluated next year to determine if the groups should receive funding, such as UTA Radio, Maverick TV and the Dance Ensemble.

In the article, public relations senior Zach Walker’s name was misspelled.

Student Publications Director Lloyd Goodman should have also been quoted as saying, “I will be working with the editors and get with students to see what they liked and didn’t like about the magazine and draw up a new plan.”
