‘Star-Telegram’ columnist to address UTA, city’s future

O.K. Carter, Fort Worth Star-Telegram associate publisher and columnist, will deliver a lecture about the history of Arlington and its relationship to the university.

The lecture will be at noon Wednesday on the Central Library’s sixth floor.

Carter said he will also discuss the evolution of those relations and general developments that will be taking place within the city.

Carter Bedford, Student Governance assistant director, said the columnist will talk about UTA’s past and future.

“He’s one of Arlington’s foremost historians,” Bedford said. “Why not bring someone who can teach the history of UTA to UTA?”

The lecture is co-sponsored by EX.C.E.L. Campus Activities and the Liberal Arts Constituency Council.

James Urban, Liberal Arts Constituency Council president and political science senior, said the council first wanted to bring Tarrant County judge Tom Vandergriff to campus to speak on the same matters. Vandergriff, however, canceled due to health problems.

The council thought Carter would be an equal replacement for Vandergriff because he is just as affluent in the history of Arlington and the university, Urban said.

“It’s a great opportunity to have someone like him,” he said.

Monday’s power outage attributed to temperature

Many campus buildings and other areas in the Metroplex lost power due to a TXU Energy electrical grid problem, said Jamie Holland, a TXU Energy customer service representative.

The outage on campus lasted about 20 minutes and affected most of the buildings on the east side, said Bryan Sims, Office of Facilities Management associate director.

The energy company is experiencing problems with electrical outages throughout North Texas, including Dallas and Fort Worth, Holland said.

She said that unseasonable temperatures contributed to the outage and that the problem was expected to continue until 7 p.m. Monday.

“We are aware of the problem,” Holland said. “We apologize for the inconvenience.”
