MOVIE REVIEW
Delightfully Disgusting
Jackass sequel is as cringe-inducing, gross and fun as the first
The Shorthorn Scene editor
With stunts like “Riot Control Test,” “Beehive
Limo” and “Rocket Cart,” the latest antics by the
Jackass crew prove once again that these guys are up for anything.
The same format — short scenes of outrageous mischief introduced
with titles — makes this second effort easy to watch for both
fans and first-timers. But that doesn’t take the content into
account. With enough poo to cover a baby-changing station, this foulfest
is only easy to watch if you have no gag reflex.
Returning themes like “Bad Grandpa” have new spins and are
just as hilarious. Pushing the envelope further than the first movie
did, a naughty grandma with serious apparel issues, played by producer
Spike Jonze now complements the grandpa, played by Johnny Knoxville.
Even tormenting Bam Margera’s ever-forgiving parents gets a new
approach, with them actually participating in some of the debauchery
instead of just being picked on. Scenes like these make for moments
of sheer hilarity without the gross-out factor.
Celebrity cameos are still there, of course. I was very delighted to
see one by John Waters, director of A Dirty Shame, which Knoxville starred
in. Other appearances include Three 6 Mafia, Tony Hawk and Mark Zupan,
who was featured in Murderball, 2005’s hit documentary about the
U.S. quadriplegic rugby team. Let’s just say the Jackass team
uses Zupan’s disability to its advantage in one stunt.
Though this effort has its share of vile acts involving farting and
defecating, the majority of the cringe-inducing scenes seem to be a
result of the pain this demented group of friends brings on each other.
It also seems there were more flat-out dangerous undertakings, like
getting trampled by angry bulls and enduring snake bites to the genitals.
These guys have certainly satisfied their fans’ thirst for blood,
pain and humiliation yet again. And with another good soundtrack, this
time featuring Peaches, Turbonegro and Pavement, this is quite an entertaining
hour and a half.
