Paint the Campus Spirited

Event lets students show school spirit, promote their organizations

The first Campus Mark in the Dark will be Sunday night as part of the Homecoming spirit competition.

From 9 p.m. to midnight, organizations and students will decorate assigned lampposts near the Central Library mall and paint sections of temporary drywall in the Activities Building.

John Hillas, university events and marketing coordinator, said the event lets students decorate for Homecoming Week. The event is sponsored by Campus Recreation and the Homecoming Committee.

Hillas said the students will not only show school spirit but will also be able to promote their organizations.

He said individual students can participate in the wall painting if there aren’t too many organizations involved, but the lampposts will more than likely be reserved for student organizations.

The number of posts decorated and size of space to paint depends on the number of groups that sign up.

“It’s a great way for students to express their individuality during Spirit Week,” nursing freshman Jessica Melve said.

Melve plans to participate in the spirit competition as part of the Panhellenic Council team.

Students will check in at the Activities Building, then decorate lampposts until 11 p.m., when they will meet back at the building to decorate their portions of drywall.

Paintbrushes and basic paint colors will be provided, but students must supply any extra means of decorating.

Hillas said students must get approval beforehand for any questionable decorating. The paintings will be in place between the entrance and the weight room until phase one of the Maverick Activities Center addition opens.
