Ben Stein, host of Comedy Central’s “Win Ben Stein’s Money” will speak about his career and sign autographs Thursday.
“Bueller. Bueller. Bueller.”

Most pop culture savants can probably recall the memorable scene of the monotone-voiced economics teacher played by Ben Stein in the 1986 cult classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

Reciting his lecture on tariffs and asking, “Anyone know what this is? Class? Anyone? Anyone?” to an unfocused classroom of teens, Stein not only paved his way into pop culture history but set the pace for a versatile career.

This career is the highlight of Ben Stein’s lecture here at 7:30 p.m., Thursday in Texas Hall.

Tickets to the show are free to students, $5 for faculty, staff and alumni and $10 for general public.

Seth Ressl, Greek Life and university events associate director, said the lecture should last about an hour, with an autograph meet-and-greet session to take place after the show.

Ressl thinks Stein will leave an impression on the audience.

“He’s a speaker who can appeal to a broader audience,” he said. “He is someone who is regularly seen in the media and associated in pop culture references.”

The lecture wouldn’t have been possible if not for the recommendation of Collins Watson, student congress vice president.

Stein left an impression on Watson at a Texas Christian University lecture the biomedical engineering graduate student attended a year and a half ago.

“He gives lectures around discourse and he talks a lot about morality.” Watson said. “His memory is phenomenal.”

Watson said that before the dinner, Stein introduced himself and had every person at the table tell Stein something about themselves, later making jokes or references from the tidbits he picked up from each person.

Watson brought the idea of bringing Stein to UTA at the President’s roundtable discussion last year, and everyone at the table was immediately open to the idea.

Watson said booking Stein was an easy task for the university. With in-laws living in Dallas, Stein immediately agreed to come.

Stein brings a résumé many will never see in their lifetime.

Stein graduated with an economics degree from Columbia University, and went to law school at Yale University.

He later became a speech writer and legal counsel to the Nixon and Ford administrations.

Stein’s stints in Washington haven’t constrained him to just politics, He has since ventured into writing — frequently for The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and magazines in New York and Los Angeles.

However, students will most likely remember him from movies, commercials, and tv shows. From 1997-2002, Stein was the host of the Comedy Central game show “Win Ben Stein’s Money,” which went on to earn several Emmy awards.

Stein’s lecture is 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Texas Hall. Tickets to the show are free to students, $5 for other university community members and $10 for general public. Tickets for the event are available at http://www.utatickets.com.
