CORRECTIONS | UPDATED June 1, 2004

In the Thursday May 6th story, “Injury leads to power outage,” John Hall’s title should have been vice president for administration and campus operations.

In the Friday May 7th story, “SC code topic of debate,” Jeff Sorensen’s title should have been director of Student Governance and organizations.

In Thursday’s story, “Facility should be near UTA,” the comments of Athletic Director Pete Carlon should have reflected his unequivocal support of any new arena plan.

April 28, 2004

In Tuesday’s story, “Magazine celebrates 3rd issue,” one of the awards for Renegade magazine was misidentified. The Pacemaker award is given by the Associated Collegiate Press.

In Friday’s story, “Committee members violate code,” the deadline for dispute hearings was incorrectly stated. The deadline is May 10.

April 21, 2004

In the April 16 editorial “Vote ‘yes’ on 04-01,” a statement should be clarified, stating the athletic department has never taken money from designated tuition.

Friday’s story “Lab involvement to be debated,” incorrectly identified the location of Los Alamos National Laboratory. The lab is in Los Alamos, N.M.

In Tuesday’s story “Scholarly professors to be recognized” a statement misquoted Dana Dunn, provost and vice president for academic affairs. The article should have said that Dr. Dunn said inductees of the university’s Academy of Distinguished Scholars Award were contacted by letter. Dunn said she will publicly announce the recipients at the faculty awards ceremony April 20.

In Friday’s story “ROTC students practice in real-life situations,” Chad Hoes should have been identified as a broadcast freshman.

Thursday’s story “Elevator traps 6 Wednesday,” should have said Communications Lecturer Phil Vinson was disappointed with the response time of Otis Elevator Company.

April 9, 2004

Thursday’s article “Prospect of start-up rests on supporters” inaccurately combined a reference to two university football programs that Athletics Director Pete Carlon said might be used as models if a team is approved here. The article should have said McNeese State, the 2002 Southland Conference champion, is an example of a longtime successful program that UTA might emulate. Southwestern Louisiana University, which fielded a team for the first time in 2003, was cited as a potential model for a successful start-up.

In Thursday’s story “Funds approval due today,” the Computer Science and Engineering Department was incorrectly identified.

April 7, 2004

In Tuesday’s story “Spaniolo names VP for research,” Dana Dunn, provost and vice president for academic affairs, was misidentified.

April 2, 2004

In Tuesday’s special advertising section 2004 UTA Best of, McDonalds, The Franciscan and Vandergriff were misspelled. Providence In the Park and Maverick Bar & Grill were also cited incorrectly.

The section should have stated the following locations correctly: Sundance Square, Best Cultural District, Main Street, Fort Worth; Pro Cuts, Best Barber, 1517 S Bowen, 1628 W Randol Mill Road, 4388 W Green Oaks Blvd; The Parks Mall, Best Place to Spend Your Parents’ Money, I-20 and Cooper St. and Colonial Car Wash, Best Car Wash, 3022 S Cooper St.

Also, the following winners were not mentioned: Best Original Barbecue, Spring Creek, 4200 S. Cooper St.; Best Pizza, Pizza Hut, 1200 N Fielder & Randol Mill Roads; Best Pool Hall, Rusty’s Billiards, 3151 S Cooper St.; Best Art Museum, Kimball, 3333 Camp Bowie Blvd; Fort Worth; Best Place to Live On Campus, Arlington Hall.

The Wednesday editorial, “Stay Informed,” should have praised telecommunications operators for handling the more than 1,000 phone calls they received Monday.

Wednesday’s article “A Gaye Old Time” should have identified English junior Patreece Dade as the third place winner at the talent show.

Tuesday’s article “UTA gains lab partner” should have identified Ron Elsenbaumer as interim vice president for research. Suzanne Montague is interim vice president for information technology. The roles were split into two positions after Keith McDowell resigned in October to accept a job at the University of Alabama.

A photo caption with Wednesday’s story “Women extend wining streak” should have identified UTA player as sophomore second baseman Katie Singleton.

March 24, 2004

Tuesday’s story, “Dean candidate shares vision for libraries,” should have said libraries dean candidate Gerald Saxon will be speaking at 10 a.m. on March 29.

Tuesday’s story, “Catching the Intern Ship,” should have said Nursing junior Andrea Mason works at Parkland Hospital in Dallas.

Tuesday’s story, “Possible deans to visit campus,” should have said that Libraries Dean candidate Gerald Saxon, associate director of libraries at UTA, will have an open session March 29. Also, the name of candidate John Gaboury, Dean of Libraries at the University of Toledo, was misspelled.

March 5, 2004

The headline on Thursday’s page one basketball story should have read “Mavs secure 2nd tournament seed.”

In Thursday’s story “Students to protest war on terror,” history senior John Dickson was misquoted. He said the “Books Not Bombs” demonstration was a move for the need of resistance to President W. George Bush. Also the story should have said the rally was organized by the Student Peace Action Network.

Clarification: In Friday’s column “What is feminism becoming?” there were several phrases and topics similar to pieces published at townhall.com Feb. 17 and Feb. 24 by syndicated columnist and talk show host Dennis Prager. A sentence in the original version that said Prager had inspired the column was removed during the editing process. Prager’s words and examples should have been better attributed in the printed version.

In Tuesday’s story “Engineers Week starts with coronation,” the coronation of engineering royalty should have stated Fatou Thiam’s brother received his electrical engineering degree from the City University of New York in 1999.

A headline for Friday’s article, “School may create degree,” should have identified the College of Education as a college, not a school.

A photo cutline that accompanied Thursday’s article “Committee lines up next week’s events” misspelled the first name of Stephan Wright, an electrical engineering graduate student. Also, the article should have referred to the College of Engineering’s week-long showcase events that started Monday as Engineers Week.

Thursday’s article “Spring totals up 6.6%” imprecisely quoted Provost Dana Dunn. She said tuition increases implemented this semester did not “dampen the enrollment momentum.”

Wednesday’s article “Shelf Life,” Biology Department Chair Jonathan Campbell’s name was misstated.

Wednesday’s article “Spring numbers released today,” should have said a spring enrollment increase would mark the 15th consecutive semester of growth.

Thursday’s story “Residence hall to open on schedule” should have said Arlington Hall was completed in 2000.

Friday’s article “Merit pay distributed by deans” should not have implied that Art and Art History Department Chair Andy Anderson was dissatisfied with the process of allotting merit raises. Quotations were used out of context which may have led some readers to believe Dr. Anderson thought negatively of the process.

In Tuesday’s article “SC president to clarify One Card proposal,” the subhead should not have used quotation marks in describing student senators as “stumped” over a proposed change to the Mav Express card. The article should have said that an on-campus bank branch is a possible part of the change. Also, the article should have stated that the Student Leader Alumni Reception honors a number of student leaders.

In Tuesday’s article “Fired law lecturer has record,” included information that should have been attributed to the The Dallas Morning News. The newspaper reported that Ronnie Robert Molina was fired in August 2003 from his job as a Dallas assistant city attorney. A spokesperson confirmed the information on Tuesday.

Thursday’s article, “Council looks forward to new dean’s agenda,” should not have referred to Architecture Dean Donald Gatzke as a doctor.
