Editorial/Our View
Conquer Your Fears
Attacks on London should encourage citizens to continue life of normalcy

On Thursday, England became the scene of an apparent act of terrorism as three subway trains and a double-decker bus were attacked. The blasts killed at least 52 and injured more than 700.

The climbing death toll and images of people struggling to find loved ones still missing conjure up memories of Sept. 11, not so far from the minds of many Americans.

For some, it also pushes forth feelings of fear and helplessness — something that is at the heart of terrorism’s aim.

But while we continue to cope with these natural reactions, we should also strive for one goal.

Don’t let fear win.

Though we live in times where precautions should be taken, the threat of terrorism should not dominate the way we live.

Many of our British neighbors returned to their normal routines the same day of the attack. We should do the same.

Those who have made arrangements to travel abroad to England or anywhere else should follow through with their plans. The loss of tourism dollars to these economies, and more importantly, the inability to live normally, helps further the goals of terrorism.

As the Department of Homeland Security continues to keep the terror alert level heightened for mass transit in the U.S., Americans also shouldn’t be deterred from public transportation.

While we should all be more aware of our surroundings, altering our lives is what the perpetrators of these heinous acts want.

As we learned from Sept. 11, terrorism can strike anywhere, at any time. We should always have a watchful eye, but changing our way of life spells success for terrorists.

While we should live carefully, we should never live fearfully. The best thing we can do to support the British and ourselves is to go about life normally and send terrorists the message that they have not won.
