Experts to address religion in public life Thursday

Four leading experts on religious matters will be featured in a discussion of public life and religion — an issue considered to have played a major role in the past presidential election.

The forum, Religion in the Public Square, will be Thursday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on the Central Library’s sixth floor.

After panel members address one another’s comments and questions, attendees will ask questions about the topic. The discussion will feature Joe Barnhart, a member of the editorial advisory boards for The Humanist and Free Inquiry and member of the University of North Texas Philosophy and Religion Studies Department. Joining Barnhart will be Ron Flowers, a retired Texas Christian University religion professor and expert in church and state relations.

Frank Guliuzza and Ron Overton will also express their views as panelists. Guliuzza is the author of Over the Wall: Protecting Religious Expression in the Public Square, published by State University of New York Press. He is a member of the Political Science and Philosophy Department at Weber State University in Utah. Overton, recent founder of The Church in Arlington, will share his experiences of growing up as a military dependent and attending a public university.

“I look forward to meeting the other speakers and hearing their thoughts on the subject,” Overton said.

Allan Saxe, political science associate professor, will moderate the event, which was organized by marketing associate professor Mark Peterson.

“The event will be more about rhetoric than force of voice,” Peterson said.

Registration payment deadline extended to today

The NetPay online payment option for students is experiencing technical difficulties resulting in an extension of the payment deadline.

The original registration payment deadline was scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday. However, many students were unable to make their payments because of technical issues with the Web site. A notice on the Student Financial Services payment site details the difficulties involving the online payment option.

Registration payments are now due by 5 p.m. today. Payments can be made in the Bursar’s Office or through the SAM telephone registration system at 817-272-2726.
