UTA Volunteers will host a volunteer fair and hold a blood drive with EX.C.E.L. Campus Activities from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today on the University Center mall to help Hurricane Katrina survivors.

Seth Ressl, UTA Volunteers programming coordinator, said the hurricanes have damaged many blood banks.

“There is a definite need for blood,” he said.

Agencies and organizations like Big Brothers and Big Sisters will man tables to inform students on opportunities to help in the community.

Ressl said he believes the fair has always been a successful recruitment tool for organizations.

“It’s a way for people to see and learn what these organizations do,” he said.

The Rotary Club of Arlington will provide free hot dogs to blood donors.

In addition to giving blood, students can help by participating in the 25th annual Bed Races on Oct. 6. According to EX.C.E.L. program coordinator Patrick “PK” Kelly, some of the Bed Races proceeds will go to the American Red Cross. Registration is $25 per team.

An example of a bed built for the races will be displayed in the UC during the blood drive.

The Bed Races will have a pajama theme, and events such as the Punt, Pass and Kick and “best dressed” contests will also be held, with a $50 award for the winners. Students can also take part in UTA’s attempt to break the world’s “biggest pillow fight” record.

History graduate student Bryan Sullins has participated in Bed Races for three years as a member of the Brazos Bulldogs. He said his team won first place in 2000 and 2001.

“It’s a unique experience,” he said. “I mean you’re pushing a bed, and it’s fast. If you’re a good sprinter, it’s not so hard.”
