The university is holding a luncheon and informational fair today for students displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

From noon to 1 p.m. in the University Center Bluebonnet Ballroom, students can have lunch and learn about different services on campus.

“We want to touch base with them,” said Frank Lamas, vice president for student affairs. “They never got an orientation.”

Dr. Lamas said the event will not be a full orientation but will introduce students to places and services on campus they may not know about.

“It seemed easier to have everybody in one big room,” he said.

He said students were initially concerned with getting situated, finding a place to live, registering and taking care of finances; however, there was no orientation to the campus.

“We want it to be a welcoming transition for them,” Lamas said. “We’re glad you’re here even though it’s tough circumstances that got you here.”

The university admitted 225 student evacuees. Lamas said personal invitations were sent to all.

Health Services is one department participating in the fair.

“We’re hoping students will find the help they need,” said Shelli Ogburn, Health Services communication assistant. “The more services they know are available, the more they will seek help.”

Ms. UTA Ally Arnwine said the UTA Ambassadors will also be at the event to mingle and meet with the new students.

Lisa Nagy, Campus Recreation marketing and public relations assistant director, said she hopes for a big crowd.

“We’ll have our table display and be talking to students,” she said.

Nagy said that even if just one student is educated, the goal has been accomplished. She said the Campus Recreation services and facilities are available for the evacuees.

“As a student at UTA, they are welcome,” she said.
