Attending university games may raise team morale, show school pride

The Mavs Volleyball Team’s season is underway and off to a slow start, but maybe this is due to the pathetic game attendance from students. Volleyball is not the only sport with bad numbers; other university sports have seen them, too.

Sports Information Director Bill Petitt said last season’s average student attendance for university sports was 204 for basketball, 125 for baseball and around 125 for volleyball. He said Texas Hall is capable of holding 3,600 people and that Clay Gould Ballpark can hold 1,500 people.

These numbers show much room for improvement. These teams represent the university on a national level, and the least students can do to show their support is attend games.

Admission to university sporting events is free for students with a Mav Express Card. Rather than reading about it afterward, come and share the university sports teams’ wins and losses with them.

If you don’t know what time a game begins, check The Shorthorn each day for times and locations.

Through past sports pages of The Shorthorn, students have had the opportunity to become acquainted with volleyball players like senior outside hitter Ashley Van Antwerp, junior setter/libero Ashley Smith and sophomore middle blocker Gina Kalb. Now that you have gotten to know these people, it’s time to go see them in action. For any sports player, having a big crowd is motivation to play to the best of your abilities.

This weekend, the Mavs volleyball team will be out of town, but will be back Sept. 23 and 24 to face Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State in Texas Hall. What better way to welcome them back than with a big crowd at their next home game?

If you already attend the games, or plan to, bring one or all of your friends with you. Students are not only encouraged to attend the volleyball games, but all university sporting events, including intramural sports which will begin soon. Get up and support your teams.

Editorial round-up

The issue:
Attendance to university sporting events is not what it could be.

We suggest:

More students should attend these events and bring friends with them.
