The Housing Office is accepting applications from students interested in resident-assistance positions for spring.

The application process ends at 5 p.m. Nov. 3 and requires students to fill out one part online and the other in the office. RA positions are available at all campus residence halls.

Arlington Hall director Josh Sankey said that being an RA requires dedication.

“I believe the applicants should be caring and willing to help out,” he said. “They should really be team players, even if they are not on call, RAs are the first people that residents go to, even before me,” he said.

Sankey said RAs work closely with students and discuss ways to improve hall conditions.

Dave Nielfen, Kalpana Chawla resident assistant, said RAs must be well organized.

“The RAs should also have passion for the job and students,” he said.

According to the application packet, RAs are also responsible for developing relationships with and helping residents adapt to group settings. RAs are expected to represent the Housing Office and act as role models even outside of work.

Mari Duncan, assistant director of housing and residence life, said applicants should be approachable.

“The applicants should be able to work with others,” she said. “They also should be energetic and personable.”

Hall directors and RAs will evaluate the applications. Interviews are scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 6, and qualifiers will be notified Nov. 18 by a letter delivered to the applicant’s hall office.

Students applying must have lived in a residence hall for two semesters, be able to maintain a 2.5 GPA and be a full-time student.

The new RAs will receive a meal scholarship, $400 gross monthly salary, reduced housing rates and leadership training.

Duncan said the committee has approximately 6 out of 41 RA openings available. A criminal background check is also required for all finalists.
