Kalpana Chawla Hall residents had their water restored around 8:30
p.m. Tuesday after it was shut off earlier in the day to fix broken
pipes.
The outage left the north side of the hall without water most of
Tuesday, causing students to use showers and restrooms elsewhere
on campus.
Hall director Jessica Berek said residents haven’t had any
more problems and that maintenance only needs to finish patching
up the ceiling; however, the water was “cloudy,” she
said.
Maintenance supervisor Lewis Bryant said that this is because of
the air in the lines and that it should clear up after the faucets
have been opened for a while. After that, he said, everything should
be “good to go.”
Bryant said the main problem with the repair is that it takes time
for the pipes to drain and that the leakage was in a pipe that branches
out to other areas.
“You can’t begin soldering with water still in the system,”
he said.
Maintenance was notified of the leak Monday afternoon after sensors
set off alarms in the building. Undeclared sophomore Ryan Polchinski,
who had to take a shower in Arlington Hall on Tuesday night, said
he was glad to have water restored.
“I’m happy that the water is back on,” he said
“I could brush my teeth this morning.”
Bryant said that most of the residents were understanding about
the situation, but marketing sophomore Brittney Joseph said it was
an inconvenience.
“After me and my friends finished working out, we found that
we couldn’t take showers,” she said. “Baby wipes
were our next option.”
Engineering sophomore Joey Karsner said he was annoyed but that
there wasn’t much he could do about it.
“I really can’t complain,” he said. “It
was something that I couldn’t control.”
