The Mavericks volleyball team lost to McNeese State for the second
time this season, 30-22, 30-27, 21-30, 30-18, Tuesday night in Lake
Charles, La.
Head coach Diane Seymour said the team started out slow and never
truly recovered.
“We were talented enough to extend the match to five games,
but it took so long to get our bodies going,” she said. “We
just didn’t have enough left.”
In the first game, the Mavericks fell behind by six early at 10-4.
Kills from Cowgirl outside hitter Trisha Seale kept McNeese State
ahead, and Tiffany Baker’s fourth kill gave them the 30-22
win.
The Mavs led 13-9 in the second game before the Cowgirls mounted
a 4-0 run to tie the score. Although McNeese State could gain no
more than a three-point advantage, it was enough as the home team
won the game and took a two-game-to-none lead in the match.
Game three stayed close with the team tying 11 times. A 5-0 run
pushed the Mavs into the lead and a kill by middle blocker Ellen
Murray gave UTA its largest lead at eight. Murray would end the
game with a service ace.
McNeese State started game four on a 6-0 run behind Baker’s
serve. The Mavericks did not get within five points as the Cowgirls
won to remain undefeated at home this season. The Cowgirls boasted
a .611 hitting percentage in the decisive game while the Mavs managed
just .192.
The Mavs’ two seniors posted double-digit kills in the loss.
Outside hitter Ashley Van Antwerp had a game-high 19 kills and middle
blocker Melissa Marek added 14 kills. Libero Dani Johnson led the
team in digs with 16.
The Mavericks did not block as well as they have in recent matches.
The team totaled five blocks in the loss compared to averaging 14.5
team blocks in last weekend’s matches.
