OPINION | OCTOBER 26, 2005

Editorial/Our View
Embrace the Change
New e-mail policies are for the benefit and safety of students

With the adoption of the new e-mail system, MavMail, students are trying to adjust to the address changes and the restriction against automatic mail redirection from university accounts.

Instead of being bitter about the forwarding restriction, students should bookmark the university e-mail login and check it like their other e-mail addresses. Those who have never logged on or used MavMail should do so. What’s one more e-mail address to check?

The system that went into effect Oct. 17 requires students to change their e-mail addresses, removing the last four digits of their Social Security number.

The option to automatically forward e-mail to other addresses will be unavailable beginning Nov. 1. Some students were not receiving important messages from the university because they were identified as spam in their other accounts, which prompted the removal of this option.

The address changes will help protect against identity theft. Just by looking at a student’s university e-mail address, identity thieves could get the student’s initials and almost half of their Social Security number.

While some may be upset about the forwarding restriction, it will prevent lost messages and encourage students to use their e-mail accounts.

Some students only use their university account for Facebook, an online database connecting students, or have never used it at all. The recent changes are intended to keep students’ personal information secure, and MavMail will send messages from the president and keep students informed about important deadlines and events.

Using your university e-mail account doesn’t take too much extra effort, and it will keep you in the know. Get the heads up on what’s happening on campus by checking it periodically.

Editorial round-up
