Basketball - Mavs picked to defend
championship in polls
Two first-team members and a first-place pick for the women’s
basketball team highlight the Southland Conference preseason selections.
Despite losing three starters from last season’s 21-10 team,
the women were picked by two SLC polls to defend their 2004 conference
championship. In the coaches and sports information directors’
polls, the Mavs narrowly topped UT-San Antonio and Louisiana-Monroe.
Guard Terra Wallace, the leading returning scorer at 13.8 points
per game, was the only junior named to the first preseason all-SLC
team. Forward Ashley Bobb was selected to represent the second team.
The men were picked to finish fifth in the coaches poll and sixth
in the SID poll. Northwestern State, the defending regular season
co-champions, was picked by both polls to win the conference again.
Senior forward Steven Thomas, the conference’s third leading
scorer at 17.1 points per game and top rebounder at 7.9 per, was
named to the first team.
