Falling off the Ride

Domino walks the line between being enjoyable and obnoxious —
coming close to falling either way.
Director Tony Scott makes Domino a fast-paced roller coaster film
with action reminiscent of another one of his flicks, True Romance.
First high point: Scott filmed the movie beautifully in a dark,
grainy way, much like his 2004 Man on Fire. Intense, contrasting
colors make the film look artistic and pleasing to watch.
The cast rocks. Any movie that can get Christopher Walken, Tom Waits
and Ian Ziering of “Beverly Hills, 90210” has to be
interesting.
Walken has some off-the-wall comments in his typical zany style
that are sure to get some laughs — “Use nun-chucks.
Nun-chucks are good.”
Men may want to see the film just to get a look at Keira Knightley
who kicks butt as Domino Harvey, a female bounty hunter and all-around
bad girl.
While men may drool over this tough vixen, women can definitely
enjoy some eye-candy of their own from the ripped Edgar Ramirez
as bounty hunter and Domino’s love interest, Choco.
This action movie has its low points, too. It pulls some cheap stunts
to try to look cool, like having tough-girl Domino perform a lap
dance to get a lead on a case.
In another tacky move, one cast member appears on an episode of
television’s trashiest show, “The Jerry Springer Show.”
Some audiences might find this amusing, but others will resent these
flashy attempts to be a wild and hip movie.
Domino sinks lower as it stretches over two hours — entirely
too long for a no-substance action piece. Yes, it is chock-full
of vigor and motion, but the movie’s over-the-top antics give
viewers a little more than they’re willing to swallow. It
would have been better without Springer and cut down to an hour
and a half.
Audiences will be torn between loving or hating Domino for its all-star
cast, gorgeous cinematography and cheap tricks, with many viewers
on both sides of the spectrum.
