To provide more meeting space for students, the Center for Cultural
Cooperation and the Multicultural Center for Cultural Cooperation
will move into the Dean of Students’ suites located in the
University Center’s lower level by the end of November.
Fred Henry, assistant dean of students and Multicultural Services
director, said the offices will be used as meeting rooms for student
organizations. He said space is at a premium on campus and that
the offices were the best available option.
“The students need more room,” he said. “In the
UC, the rooms are always crowded.”
Frank Lamas, vice president for Student Affairs, said the organizations
thought this was a better idea than having students go to numerous
offices.
He said the centers will still serve the same purposes but will
be brought together as the Multicultural Center for Cultural Cooperation
to make their purpose clear. He said this gives them a better way
to communicate and serve the students.
“People can’t take advantage of the service, if they
don’t know what it is,” he said.
Henry said the CCC is available to help students develop as they
seek their degree. He said he would like for students to make the
right decisions while attending college.
Josh Sawyer, Student Congress president and architecture senior,
said it can get crowded in the UC on Monday and Wednesday.
“It would bring Student Affairs closer together,” he
said. “They will be closer to the people that they work with.”
Business management sophomore Johnny Gilpatrick said it’s
hard trying to reschedule a room in the UC if an organization has
to cancel, so the extra meeting space will benefit the students.
“You have to reserve a room five days in advance,” he
said. “There is nothing they can do about the limited space.”
He said they try and relocate the organization to other buildings
on campus, but it can be difficult.
Lamas said that although the office is relocating, they are trying
to be sensitive to the students that use the computers and meet
with the staff in the CCC. He said they are going to try and provide
more suites in the future.
Lamas said the new rooms will be open to all students, like any
other room in the UC.
“They will still have to reserve the space,” he said.
