It’s all downhill from here.
More specifically, it’s down a bobsled slope for assistant
kinesiology professor Dr. Cindy Trowbridge, now the athletic trainer
for the U.S. Women’s Bobsled team.
Trowbridge, also the clinical education coordinator for the Athletic
Training Education program, is currently in Italy helping the team
prepare for the World Cup, which is set for December.
Lou Fincher, program director for athletic training education, said
she has known Trowbridge for two years, and that she has made it
a lifelong goal to work as an athletic trainer for the U.S. Olympic
Committee.
Fincher said athletic trainers are required to practice for five
to seven years before they can apply to the committee and that applicants
go through a strict evaluation process, but there are multiple benefits
to the position.
“It’s an opportunity to travel,” she said. “It’s
one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. This event will select
the members for the Olympics.”
Trowbridge completed her doctorate in exercise science in 2004,
specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation. She worked
at three universities before coming to UTA last fall.
She also has a master’s degree in physical education and athletic
training and a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology.
Mark Ricard, associate professor and graduate program director for
kinesiology, said he has known Trowbridge for five years and worked
with her while she worked to obtain her doctorate.
“Most athletic trainers like to stay connected to the clinical
side of things,” he said. “To be able to do it at the
Olympic level is very special and brings prestige to the university.”
He said he can see aspects of her personality aiding her in the
position.
“She is a very strong scientist and also has a really nice
bedside manner,” he said. “It’s a combination
of having a good knowledge of the background and a good set of skills.”
Trowbridge could not be reached for comment, but Fincher said she
is expected to return in mid-December.
