The Lady Mavs softball team extended its winning streak to four
games with a 10-2 win over North Texas at Denia Park in Denton Tuesday.
The team used a pair of five-run innings and a season-high 12 hits
to get the decisive victory over UNT and improve its overall record
to 13-15-1.
Freshman left fielder Amanda Haney said the team tries not to think
about its current four-game winning- streak but said the players
focus on the task at hand: winning one game at a time.
“There’s been a big change from the beginning of the
season to where we are now, so we try not to think about the winning-streak.
We just try to keep it going,” she said.
Sophomore Katie Singleton, who led the Lady Mavs with three hits
and five RBIs, agreed and said she and the rest of the team focus
on giving their all every night and not worrying about the past.
“I don’t think about the win-loss column at all,”
she said. “I think about getting the win that night.”
The Lady Mavs struck first after batting around in the top of the
second.
Singleton plated the first two runs of the game on a single before
Haney and freshman center fielder Courtni Anderson followed with
run-producing singles of their own. Senior center fielder April
Jones sent the final run of the inning home with a fielder’s
choice.
North Texas threatened in the bottom of the fourth when a two-out
home run made it 5-2.
The Lady Mavs added five more in the sixth to end their second straight
game by the mercy rule.
Coach Debbie Hedrick attributes the team’s recent offensive
success to hard work put in during practice.
“We’ve been working really hard on being aggressive
on good pitches and getting good pitches to hit,” she said.
“I think that’s what we did today, and this shows what
can happen when we’re patient at the plate.”
Singleton drove in the first runs of the inning with a three-run
home run to put the Lady Mavs in front, 8-2. Sophomore right fielder
Autumn Petrino, who reached base after being hit by a pitch, scored
the ninth run of the game on a double by sophomore shortstop Beverly
Rowan.
After Rowan advanced to third, Haney laid down a squeeze bunt to
score the final run of the game. Freshman Lauren Hebert (3-4) earned
the win for UTA after allowing two earned runs in four and two-thirds
innings. Sophomore Jill Garro earned her first save of the year
after pitching one and a third innings of shutout ball.
The Lady Mavs travel to Waco at 6 p.m. Wednesday to take on Baylor.
