Lead singer Josh Weathers elicited giggles from the audience. He caressed the microphone as he walked the stage deep into the lyrics of the late Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get it On”. He didn’t notice that the microphone stand had come out of its base, and once he did, he didn’t seem to care.

Despite the blooper, judges were impressed with the performance, and the Joshua Weathers Band walked away with first place and a $300 gift certificate.

EX.C.E.L. Campus Activities hosted its 10th Annual Talent Show yesterday in the University Center Rosebud Theatre. The free show had nine performances in categories including vocal performance, dance performance and dramatic interpretation.

Weathers, the lead singer and guitar player in the four-member band, said the band has been together a little over a month.

He called its style a mixture of pop and jazz and said the band has many original songs but chose to play a classic.

“It’s a talent show, and we figured we would do a crowd pleaser,” said the education sophomore.

He gauged the audience correctly. The crowd immediately recognized the song and sang along with Weathers through the chorus, “let’s get it on”. They stood in agreement with the judges and granted him the People’s Choice Award.

The award is based on ballots from the audience after the show.

Pre-nursing sophomore Melinda Corso took home a $200 certificate for a vocal performance of Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing”. She received a standing ovation from her sister and many friends from Arlington Hall where she is as a resident assistant.

She belted out the tune with ease as result of 15 years of singing and experience in other talent shows, she said.

Corso said she wants to be the next American Idol. She plans to audition for the show’s next season when tryouts begin.

“From the first show, I was like, ‘That sounds fun,’ ” she said.

She said vocal talent runs in her family, as both her parents are singers.

Third-place winner and marketing freshman Aubra Bulin is also a veteran at her talent.

A dancer of nine years, Bulin won a $100 gift certificate.

She sat on the floor of a backstage dressing room and stretched before going on stage.

“I don’t usually get nervous, I just get excited,” she said. “I just like to dance and I look for any opportunity I can.”

This article should have identified English junior Patreece Dade as the third place winner at the talent show.
