Snow Spirit
Fans and volunteers chill in the Texas Hall parking lot, enjoying free pizza and drinks despite the weather

Jamaar Williams looked a little out of place at the tailgate party on Saturday.

In a crowd of shivering bodies, knit hats and gloves, Williams served up pizza wearing only a pair of jeans and a matching jean jacket. He seemed unfazed by temperatures that came close to dipping into the 20s.

He served iced drinks with his bare hands and had only a thick layer of twisted dreadlocks to warm his head.

“It’s my first time seeing snow, so I don’t mind,” the architecture freshman said.

Students attended the party in the Texas Hall parking lot despite the snow Saturday. It was the first event of the day, and starting at 11 a.m. the Athletic Department gave out Nizza Pizza, chicken nuggets and soda to fans who braved the elements.

Williams agreed to work the party after a fraternity alumnus asked him for a favor. He said he had been outside for about an hour but had no regrets about volunteering to work. He smiled and served people as he watched them gather around the food only to retreat inside to a warmer atmosphere.

He said he was also enjoying all the free food he wanted.

Williams, and with some Mav Maniacs members managed to keep spirits up and stomachs full as the only tailgaters out of two groups scheduled that day.

“I’m glad they came through,” said Jimmie Kellum, a member of Beta Theta Pi. “It shows a lot of commitment.”

The temperature did not deter students from waiting in line as snow flakes cooled their pizza.

Mav Maniacs president Kami Baitz said she thinks warmer weather would have attracted more students to the party, but the snow showed people that some organizations will celebrate school spirit no matter what.

“We always want to back our teams,” she said. “We want to show people you can have school spirit just by grabbing pizza and hanging out before the game.”
