Crowned friends share excitement

Diane Dietz hardly gets a chance to enjoy
her new crown. Her sorority sisters are taking turns wearing it
around the house.
Graphic design senior Dietz and business finance senior Casey Townsend
were crowned king and queen at halftime of the Lady Mavs’
game on Saturday.
The six members of Homecoming Court, in their sparkling dresses
and suits, were easy to spot among the crowd as they waited under
the bleachers full of screaming fans before being presented.
Dietz wore a black, strapless dress that she compared to the one
Jennifer Lopez wore in Maid in Manhattan.
“I just hope I don’t trip on the red carpet,”
she said before the coronation.
As the contestants walked two at a time down the red carpet, their
close friends and family cheered loudly.
Dietz’s grandfather could not control his tears as the atmosphere
brought back memories of his college days.
He was not alone. Friends and family shed tears as they surrounded
Dietz to congratulate her on her crowning.
“I was shaking the whole time,” she said.
Votes for Homecoming king and queen were cast during a fall election.
The top three candidates for each position make up the court, but
the king and queen are kept secret until their Homecoming coronation.
“I’m excited,” Dietz said. “Me and Casey
are really good friends, so it’s cool.”
Townsend said he was shocked when his name was called.
“I didn’t expect to win,” he said.
He decided to run for king at the last minute with the encouragement
of his Sigma Chi fraternity brothers.
Townsend, also Mr. UTA, has a good idea about what it takes to be
a public figure on campus.
“I have similar roles as Mr. UTA,” he said.
Dietz admits that she is clueless when it comes to her responsibilities
as queen. But she has an idea.
“I really want to see students get involved especially during
Homecoming week,” she said.
Townsend and Dietz have the responsibility of making numerous appearances
together throughout Homecoming week in an effort to promote school
spirit.
The two work closely as members of the UTA Hosts program.
“We’ve both supported each other since day one, so I
was excited for both of us,” Dietz said.
