The Student Congress president hopes to clear confusion about a
proposal to add debit card features to student identification cards
at tonight’s meeting.
Josh Warren said students seemed stumped about what administrators
call the “One Card solution.” He said he hopes a simplified
information sheet will clarify the proposal.
“Receiving feedback from the senators has been a slow process
because the information I previously addressed to the senators was
unclear and hard to explain,” Warren said.
The SC President said the One Card solution features the present
functions of the Mav Express Card, such as meal plans and library
privileges, and enhanced functions that could include unlimited
ATM access and free checking accounts for participants. Additional
services of the One Card solution would include convenient bank
locations, Financial Aid/Refund distribution and payroll disbursement
for campus employees.
Students could access financial education tools on planning, budgeting
and student loan information online.
Services provided under the One Card plan would be the ability to
withdraw funds at a bank location and ATMs off campus. Students
would also be able to access their financial aid refund reimbursement.
An alternative solution for the One Card solution would be to have
a separate bank card available to perform banking transactions along
with the Mav Express Card.
Warren said he will also inform the senators of UTSAC, a student
advisory council in which two students from each UT System school
branch government meet in Austin to discuss student issues such
as tuition increases and campus security.
Warren said the senators will give him issues and proposals to introduce
and discuss during the UTSAC meeting.
He said he plans to remind the senators of the Student Leader Alumni
Reception on Feb. 17 in the Carlisle Suite. The event is to invite
former Mr. and Mrs. UTA and other former Student Ambassadors to
meet with the new senators and give their feedback to each other
on past and present issues.
“During this event, the senators have time to relax and gain
a perspective on how the university was, and how it is now,”
Warren said.
correction
In this article, the subhead should not have used
quotation marks in describing student senators as “stumped”
over a proposed change to the Mav Express card. The article should
have said that an on-campus bank branch is a possible part of the
change. Also, the article should have stated that the Student Leader
Alumni Reception honors a number of student leaders.
