Interim Vice President Ronald Elsenbaumer was named vice president
for research by interim Provost Dana Dunn and President James Spaniolo
on Monday.
“Informally, I received input from faculty and others and
they gave an enthusiastic endorsement for Dr. Elsenbaumer,”
Spaniolo said.
Dr. Elsenbaumer has been interim vice president for research for
five months. He will begin the permanent position April 15.
He said he will continue to work on current activities, so his day-to-day
work won’t change.
Spaniolo said the change will be in planning, in that Elsenbaumer
can now perform for the long-term.
No search was made by the administration for outside candidates,
Dr. Dunn said.
“I have every confidence that if we had done an external search
and attracted top-quality candidates, that Ron would have been selected,”
she said.
Expectations are that he’ll be working with faculty and leadership,
including deans, developing a strategy for increasing funded research
at the university, Spaniolo said.
“I am delighted to be able to serve the university and president
in this fashion,” Elsenbaumer said.
Working with faculty in all colleges and departments to find avenues
of funding for their research is part of the job, he said.
He is also involved in helping to manage, gain funding for and close
out sponsored research. Managing intellectual property rights issues
and assisting in moving research through the Arlington Technology
Incubator with the help of its director are other components of
the role, he said.
“I look forward to continuing the path we’re on of enhancing
our sponsored research as a leading research university,”
Elsenbaumer said.
The five-month period of his interim service gave Spaniolo an opportunity
to get to know Elsenbaumer. He is qualified, Spaniolo said, because
he has done a great job in the interim capacity, has a lot of private
sector and university experience and jumped right in and became
engaged in his role on and off campus.
Elsenbaumer was notified last week to make sure he accepted the
position before announcing it, Spaniolo said.
Elsenbaumer joined UTA in 1991 and served as chair of two departments,
Director of the Nanofab Research and Teaching Center and associate
vice president for Research.
