In two weeks, the Student Fee Oversight
Committee will vote on the approval of more than 100 proposed course
and incidental fees for fall 2005.
The committee, comprised of student representatives from university
constituency councils, met Tuesday to discuss the proposed fees
for a Nov. 24 vote to recommend proposals to President James Spaniolo.
The proposal includes a cap removal on two fees that would affect
all students, the computing and information technology fee and the
library service fee.
The library service fee would stay at $15-per-semester credit hour,
but the current $172.50 cap would be removed. This means a student
who takes 12 hours would pay an extra $7.50.
Earlier this semester, library officials said they wanted to raise
the cap on the fee to compensate for the lack of increase in state
funding.
The overall libraries budget rose by about $400,000 this year to
approximately $11 million.
About 70 percent, or $7.7 million, of their overall budget was generated
from student fees this year with an additional $3.3 million in state
funding.
The $26-per-semester credit hour computing and technology fee is
currently capped at $330. This means that a student taking 15 hours
would pay $60 more if the cap is dropped.
The councils also reviewed the proposed fees specific to their colleges
or schools before the meeting, and their representatives brought
concerns from those discussions to the committee.
Deans submitted proposed fees to the Office of the Provost and later
sent them to the committee for review. The committee is only analyzing
course and incidental fees, or fees which are not charged to all
students.
In one of the 32 liberal arts proposed fees, a student enrolled
in THEA 1303 Performance Fundamentals I: Voice and Movement would
see a new $55 fee to defray costs of replacement rehearsal materials
and stage supplies.
At the meeting, liberal arts representative Emily Garza said her
constituency council previously reviewed the proposed fees and voted
unanimously to have all the college’s fees approved.
Under the proposal, the School of Architecture has 15 proposed fees,
which are expected to help pay for additional staff. Architecture
representative Jeremiah Spoon said student fees should not pay for
staff. Provost Dana Dunn said she would ask Architecture Dean Donald
Gatzke about that aspect of the fees.
The committee is to confer with its individual councils until the
Nov. 24 meeting.
