Open Your Mouth
A smile opens the window to personality

The Shorthorn: Lung Lin

Ladies, graceful in all your ways, I petition you with deep concern from the single guys.

There is something you could do to increase your chances of finding Mr. Right. That simple thing is to smile.

I am a single guy myself and a firm believer that beauty is not only skin-deep. The influence behind your smile is more powerful than you may realize. With all the qualities that women possess, such as intelligence, honesty and innocence, I feel a smile can reveal your character.

Guys, imagine getting to school, not finding a parking space and being late to class. So far, your day isn’t going well, and all you want to do is go home. After class, you rush to the library, fight for a computer to check your grade and find out it’s bad. You leave the library in a fiery rage, not caring about anyone in your path, and suddenly, like a cool fresh ocean wave, she smiles. The anger fizzles away.

There is something about a smile that feels good. Despite popular belief about males, when I see a girl, the first thing I notice is her face. You see, expressions are windows to personality.

A girl’s attitude, the way she carries herself, even how she holds her cell phone — these behaviors magnifies her demeanor. I am personally turned off by a girl when she is grimacing or the look on her face isn’t pleasant. No matter how pretty a girl you are, an angry look can make you unattractive.

If you are of the opinion that you can grab a “good guy” with looks alone, then let’s dissect relationships. A guy could use you simply for beauty and not your brains. He could fail to express a deep concern about your feelings, neglect deep, meaningful conversation or forget about trying to understand you and your future plans. He might not even have a plan for himself or for the relationship and only want to spend “quality time” to get “quality” from the night. Let’s face facts. Beauty without a smile yields loneliness.

Women deserve a better image than what is presented in the media. If you’re searching for more meaningful relationships, then don’t give up and just look the other way. Your character will outlast your days of physical attributes. That’s why it is so much more important to let someone of the opposite sex see the inside of you. We just feel that from a distance, a happy face is the best way to convey it. Ladies, you are beautiful. All we ask is that you let the world see it through your smile.

“Keep a smile on your face, and let your personality be your autograph,” Leo Daniel
