Movin to the Front
The wheelchair basketball team
doesnt get the recognition it deserves
The Movin Mavs wheelchair basketball team
played host to its first regular season tournament at UTA on Saturday
in the Activities Building. The tournament provided students the
opportunity to watch a game of wheelchair basketball.
UTA does not have a football team and is at the bottom of the food
chain of Division I-A schools. We do not have a stunning presence
in big-time athletic arenas. While the university does well in the
Southland Conference, the university excels with different programs,
such as wheelchair basketball. The campus community should support
all athletic programs even if the sport isnt what is
considered typical of college sports.
UTA distinguishes itself in wheelchair sports and is well known
for its commitment to the Movin Mavs. With the start of the
scholarship-funded wheelchair tennis team, UTA continues to broaden
its cache of unique and competitive sports.
Last year, the Movin Mavs traveled to the national tournament
not only to play but to bring back a championship trophy. UTAs
wheelchair basketball program is known nationwide. Its time
to better recognize it on campus. While most of the Movin
Mavs tournaments happen off campus and out-of-state, many students
do not even know that wheelchair basketball exists. By holding tournaments,
UTA can establish an identity nationally and with the student body.
By offering scholarships, the university helps secure the best players
and keeps the team motivated. Practices are open, and support is
always welcome. With last weekends tournament under its belt,
the UTA Movin Mavs continue to distinguish themselves as an
exemplary team. Support the Movin Mavs.
