College basketball games last 40 minutes, but it was the final 11 seconds in Saturday’s UTA-Stephen F. Austin matchup that decided who would hold first place in the Southland Conference.

The Lady Mavs failed to get off a game-winning attempt, and the Ladyjacks won 57-56.

Coach Donna Capps said the team designed a play for junior center Sheena Johnson in the timeout before the final possession. There was a backup plan in the event Johnson could not get a shot off.

Johnson tried to pass the ball underneath the basket to junior forward Temeckia Brown, but the pass was deflected by Ladyjack senior center Amy Collins. SFA extended it’s conference lead to a game and a half.

Johnson said the one-point loss was heartbreaking, but the team definitely thinks it can compete with the five-time conference champions. The Ladyjacks have won 14 of 15 conference titles.

The Lady Mavs out-rebounded SFA by 16, and they dominated 19-6 on the offensive boards.

After losing to Southwest Texas State three days earlier, Capps said she was pleased with the team’s effort.

“This loss was really heartbreaking because I saw our team play as hard as they can,” Capps said. “They left it on the court and I wanted them to be rewarded.”

Capps said she was impressed with Brown, who scored a season high 12 points and pulled down 9 rebounds after shooting just over 30 percent coming into the game.

“I was just hitting my shots,” she said. “This has been long overdue.”

Capps said she was also impressed with the way Johnson and sophomore guard Krystal Buchanan performed on the road against a hostile crowd. They answered the physical and verbal challenges the Ladyjacks presented them with at the beginning of the game, she said.

“I think Sheena’s got a lot of pride,” Capps said. “At the first of the game she and Krystal really stepped up. That’s what leaders do.”
