Continuing Education
Master anglers share secrets
Professional fishermen visit UTA to teach techniques to all ages and skill levels this weekend.

It’s hard to find a substantial body of water anywhere on campus — perhaps the fountain by the Central Bridge.

By Saturday, the university might look more like a fishing tournament than an institution of higher learning.

The Citgo Bassmaster University starts Saturday and continues through Sunday and is sponsored by the continuing education department. Bassmaster classic champions from across the country will be on hand to teach the secrets of the pros.

“People come up to land-locked Arlington with their boats and all their fishing gear from all over the state to get these lessons. It’s quite a sight,” said Brentney Parks, continuing education marketing manager. “It is a program that professionals and champions from all over the country come to teach.”

This year, six top professionals will take part in the event.

“The pros make the program special,” said Gary L. White, Bassmaster University director. “Any angler, novice or expert, can improve his ability to catch bass by learning from these guys.”

Other pro-fisherman instructors include Denny Brauer, bass fishing’s all-time leading money winner with $1.5 million earned at bass tournaments. Ray Scott, also known as “Bass Boss,” will attend as well. He founded the Anglers Sportsman’s

Society.

The instructors will teach spinnerbait casting, bait and lure selection and how to retrieve the catch.

Bassmaster University may boast some of the biggest names in the fishing world, but some students just weren’t biting.

“It’s a great program with great teachers, but I would never go,” continuing education student John Moody said.

Moody claimed the pros could never top his techniques.

Engineering major Andrew Slaughter said he was “stoked about the program.”

“I really look forward to taking the classes because my fishing skills are terrible,” he said. “I want to actually catch a fish this spring break.”

The program is designed for all ages and skill levels. The cost is $99, and registration lasts until 7 a.m. Saturday. Children can enroll for half-price if accompanied by a paying adult. To sign up for Bassmaster University, contact the Division of Continuing Education at 817-272-2581.
