English professor Lauren Porter will leave
next month for Charles University in Prague to do what she says
she loves most teaching.
Dr. Porter was selected for the Fulbright Program, which sends 800
scholars and professionals worldwide to lecture or conduct research
in a variety of academic and professional areas.
I think it is a wonderful opportunity, Porter said.
Im sure it will be quite a different experience.
Porter will leave for the Czech Republic in February and return
in June. She will head for Charles University, the oldest university
in central Europe, where she will teach Modern American Drama; The
American Novella; and American Literature, World War II to the present.
English professor Kenneth Roemer said the Fulbright Program looks
for specific characteristics when selecting scholars scholar
reputation, track record of being a good teacher and ability to
adapt to living in other cultures.
Roemer said Porter participates in several university committees,
displaying her ability to work well with others.
Shes someone who can participate, Roemer said.
She can get along with people and work with people.
English chair Tim Morris said Porters positive interaction
with students made her a candidate for the Fulbright. He said he
recalls only one other Fulbright lecturer from UTA during his 15
years at the university.
Shes an ideal instructor, he said. Shes
very challenging and very demanding and yet students unanimously
feel she cares about them.
She can bring very interesting aspects to American culture,
Morris said.
Porter has researched her destination, taking Czech lessons once
a week with a UTA student from Prague.
Thats been quite fun, she said. It is a
little role reversal.
