In its last regular-season homestand, the Lady Mavericks softball
team swept Sam Houston State University to improve to 21-3 in Southland
Conference play and 33-14 overall.
To do this, UTA had to overcome an early 2-0 Bearkat lead in game
three to come away with a 3-2 win. Game three was the last home
game for seniors Melanie Williams, Ali Lommel and Jessica Carriger.
All around we played very well, Coach Debbie Hedrick
said. Its just that in game three, we had to get our
bats going again.
Sam Houstons only offensive production came in the first inning
when third baseman Erin Lindsey hit a single to the left to score
two Bearkat runners.
UTA would whittle the Bearkat lead in the bottom of the third inning
when Williams scored on an error by the Sam Houston first baseman.
The Lady Mavs tied the game, 2-2, in the sixth inning. April Jones,
running for catcher Crystal Krebs, scored on an RBI double by Jenna
Fortune. Krebs reached base on a single and advanced to second off
a throwing error.
Sam Houston committed five errors on the weekend compared to UTAs
one. Hedrick said errors lead to opportunities.
Every time you make an error, it gives the other team another
opportunity to get a hit and keep the inning alive, she said.
The game stayed tied until the bottom of the 7th inning. Williams
led off with an infield single and with one out remaining, she stole
third with Lommel at the plate. Lommel laid down a squeeze bunt,
scoring Williams and winning the game for UTA, 3-2.
UTA blanked the Bearkats in Fridays doubleheader, 3-0 and
5-0.
Freshman Jill Garro earned the game three win for the Lady Mavs
after replacing starter Katy Cox, who threw 3.2 innings and gave
up two earned runs. Garro struck out four, while giving up two hits,
the same amount as Cox.
Katy is entitled to an off game, Hedrick said. Jill
came in and did a real good job for us. She picked up two good wins
over the weekend.
