The Delta Delta Delta sorority will host Frats at Bat, a charity
softball tournament, Saturday to raise funds for cancer research.
The tournament will last from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Randol Mill Park
in Arlington, Greek Life adviser Elizabeth Wade said.
Tickets are $5, and proceeds will be donated to Cook County Hospital
in Fort Worth and the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
in Memphis, Tenn., said Diane Dietz, the sorority’s philanthropy
chair.
“The event should raise about $7,000,” she said. “Everything
we raise will go toward the kids.”
Part of the money comes from the $25 entry fee teams pay. To compete,
teams must be composed of at least 10 members and no more than 15.
In the past, only fraternities and fraternity alumni could compete.
This year, the tournament is open to the community, Dietz said.
“This is our seventh year to do it,” she said. “But
this is the first year we have had girls enter.”
Tickets for a raffle featuring gift certificates to local businesses
will cost $1. Much of the event’s funding comes from local
donors, Dietz said.
The sorority will mail a check to the St. Jude hospital and deliver
a check to the Cook County Hospital in November. It hopes to raise
more than $10,000 in this and other events, Dietz said.
