Men’s golf ties for 9th in Ky.
The men’s golf team tied for ninth place in its second performance
of the season Monday and Tuesday. The players competed at the Second
Annual Cardinal Intercollegiate Invitational in Louisville, Ky.,
against 14 other universities.
Coach Jay Rees said this week’s tournament showed him the
team’s chipping, putting and driving needs to improve. But,
Rees said, talented players are on the team. The key to doing well
is confidence, he said.
The team shot a game of 300 in the opening round and 301 in the
second. In the final round, players shot a game of 307 to tie East
Carolina University.
“We need to be more confident in our approach at competition,”
Rees said. “I think if we drive the ball well, we’ll
be very competitive in the field. But, right now, these things are
holding us back.”
Junior Jordan Krantz, who shot a round of 75 to tie for the individual
player’s 12th place, was among the top Mavericks in the tournament.
Other top players included senior Landon Allen and sophomore Tyrone
Mordt, who tied for 30th.
Rees said the team is capable of doing well in future tournaments
if they improve.
“If we play to our abilities, I feel we will be able to compete
with anyone,” he said.
The team will compete again Oct. 13 to Oct. 14 in McKinney at the
Southern Methodist University Invitational.
Tennis team travels Houston, California
The women’s tennis team will play in two tournaments this
weekend. Five players will compete in the Houston Cougar Classic,
while two others will compete in the ITA All-American Invitational
in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Players Gretel Hach, Monica Peciulionyte, Anete Rozkalne, Simri
van Rooyen and Jessica Sheppard will play in Houston. Players Marketa
Cizova and Daniela Novakova will compete in the pre-qualifier at
UCLA today with a chance to continue the weekend in the ITA Invitational.
Coach Christian Wassmer said the team has done well in the past
two tournaments. He said the players competing in Houston are expected
to do well, but the tournament in California depends on the competition
they play.
“They’ve been great and working really hard,”
he said. “They have team chemistry, and they are showing that
on the court.”
New doubles teams debut this weekend
The men’s tennis team will hold the UTA Invitational at the
Arlington Tennis Center this weekend. Six out of the eight players
on the team will compete.
Sophomore Ian Vasquez-Row said the team has been training hard,
and that will show in this weekend’s tournament.
Nine teams including UTA will compete this weekend: Texas Christian
University, the University of Oklahoma, UT-Pan American, Lamar University,
Abilene Christian University, Wichita State University, St. Mary’s
University and Ouachita University. The competition is being held
off campus because larger court space is needed.
Coach Christian Wassmer said he formed new doubles teams this week
and believes his players are excited to play with new partners.
“These guys have been playing well, and I can’t wait
to see this weekend’s results,” Wassmer said.
