Fraternity to present 8th
annual show for charity
Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity will conduct its eighth annual Alpha
Apollo Night at 7 p.m. Friday in the University Center Rosebud Theatre.
Mechanical engineering senior Darius Gray, also Alpha Phi Alpha’s
Zeta Chi chapter president, said he expects between 200 and 300
people at the event. The $5 admission is waived for those who bring
two canned food items, he said.
A talent contest is open to anyone willing to vie for crowd response.
Crowd response will determine the winner. Performances will include
singing, rapping and dancing. The event winner for the last two
years was a rapper.
Combining charity and competition is an easy way to collect canned
goods quickly, Gray said. “People want to be entertained,”
he said. Admitting people with two canned goods to the event will
“encourage them to donate.” Last year, the group received
500 canned goods. Organizers expect to have similar earnings again
this year, he said.
Those interested in competing can reach organizers at 817-300-2164.

Sam’s Click Café reopens Friday with added
space
The newly expanded Sam’s Click Café will open Friday
with more than twice the number of computers, seating and space.
Interim President Charles Sorber and interim Provost Dana Dunn will
open the facility during a 10:15 a.m. ceremony.
There will be door prizes, including two portable USB drives, four
headsets and Dreamweaver and Fireworks software. Java City will
also provide free lemon bars and doughnuts and give coffee discounts
during the event.
The expansion increases the number of computers in the café
from 36 to 83 as well as doubles space and seating. All of the computers
have been upgraded to Pentium 4. There will also be digitally-enhanced
group study rooms, but those may not be finished by Friday, Libraries
Associate Director Gerald Saxon said.
Student Congress has also donated 30 wireless laptops this year
and have promised 30 more next year, Saxon said. The group’s
donation will be recognized at the ceremony.
The café originally opened with 36 computers in 2001 and
has not expanded until now.
